Lindsey S. asks: I live on Hurburt AFB.  Does anyone have any questions? It's in between Pensacola and Destin FL.  My husband and I have been stationed here for 4 years.

Kristina C. says: I do. Is the beach oily?

Lindsey S. says: lol very.

Ally D. says: I live hear until August!! We are going to FT Eustis!! Have you liked it??

MDS says: Lindsey how is the hospital/medical facility there? Where do you guys go out for entertainment? Restaurants? I better stop now....LOL talk to you later.

Kristina C. says: Well Lindsey doesn't go anywhere or do anything... And since I do and have lived here for over 15 years I'll answer!

The hospital I have to go to (even though my hubby is stationed at Hurlburt) is Eglin AFB because I am pregnant and they don't have enough Dr.'s on staff at Hurbie...

The hospital on Hurbie... has a pharmacy and phlebotomy and for the active duty they can get their teeth cleaned and their eyes checked!

Restaurants!!! In Destin there's McGuire's Irish Pub The Red Door Saloon Hog's Breath Saloon In Fort Walton Beach there's many different restaurants ranging from Red Lobster to Olive Garden to Buffalo Wild Wings/Buffalo's Reef Thai restaurants Japanese restaurants and many seafood restaurants! All of the above are exceptional!

Entertainment: Most nights are Ladies Night around here The Swamp (saw Bret Michaels Vanilla Ice and many more bands there) The Block (saw Tracy Lawerence there) Club Overboard (saw 3 6 Mafia there) and there's plenty of quaint little bars around town to go and throw some money in the juke box and have some fun (darts pool etc)! There's places like the Gulfarium and parks for your kids and dogs! There's also The Deluna Fest coming up in a month or so 311 Stone Temple Pilots Daughtry Bush Thirty Seconds To Mars and more than 20 other bands listed to play!

Oh I forgot to mention there's also the WHITE BEACH! And there is no oil. I go out on a boat every weekend to Crab Island in Destin and there is no oil in the water nor on the beach... The cleanup crew is very efficient if they see the oil which they claim is deep int he sand if any at all!

Hello Everyone!  I will be arriving to Hurlburt mid March and I was wondering if anyone could provide me with info as far as the local schools CDC etc.  We are looking to buy a home in Crestview.  About how far away is this area from the base (have a few people statione here at my current base who lived there).  Any information anyone could provide me would be helpful.  Thank you!

Love it here!  Coastal living at it's finest.  Only drawback is it's kinda quiet pretty laid back.  We don't have many fast cars and we aren't living on the edge but there's enough to do nearby.  It's very beautiful here especially in Destin.  The sun shines the majority of the time here.  October is the best time to visit.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what Middle School and High School the kids would go to if we lived on base? We are moving to Hurlburt in Sept. Thank you for your time.

We have lived at Hurlburt Field for about 4 months now. We live on the main base housing, and I love our house. It is 2 bedroom, 1 bath. All the windows are new, and we have only had minor problems with the house. Our backyard is fenced, and we have two dogs that do fine both inside and outside. We enjoy living on base because we don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have to pay for any utilities other than cable, internet and phone.

As far as schools, I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know about the quality of them, but I know there are several colleges around the base, and a couple of Grade Schools in the area as well.

For kids, there are alot of ?¢‚Ǩ?ìtourist?¢‚Ǩ¬ù attractions down here, like zoos and waterparks, but there are also lots of playgroups that get together on and around base.

The medical here is?¢‚Ǩ¬¶not up to par. I have had to wait quite awhile for an appointment with my PCM. On hurlburt, there is only a clinic. There is a hospital on Eglin, where they have an emergency room. I have had a problem with some of the doctors giving me incorrect test results, that if had been read correctly, would have lead to a diagnosis

As far as moving tips, I recommend shopping around online for some off base housing, because I have heard the wait for housing down here can be crazy sometimes.

A lot of people that are stationed here love living in Navarre, it is beautiful out there, and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a lot more private out there. Although they say that in a few years that Navarre will be a tourist attraction just like Destin. For those of you who don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know yet, Hurlburt Field Fl is only the base and we are pretty much inside of Fort Walton Beach Fl. Which is in between Destin and Pensacola. About 30-45 minutes from Pensacola and Destin. I have a baby that is 15 months old, and I take her to a doctor off base, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s called Navarre Pediatrics, which is great, and she sees doctor ElGuwini- not sure about spelling, but i?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve found that they can pretty much get my daughter in any time, where as on base they couldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t. We haven?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t been to the dentist yet so I can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t give you much advice on a pediatric dentist. There is a mall here called Santa Rosa Mall it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s not far from the base it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s on the Mary Esther strip, but I like to shop at the outlets in Destin. On Tuesdays the mall has free Carousel rides for kids and discount if not free kids meals, and coloring at the Chick fil a in the mall. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know much about the school around here but i?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve heard of the schools in Navarre as being some of the best around here. There is a flea market out in Navarre (near gulf breeze) that my husband and daughter and I go to when we are bored on Saturdays and Sundays, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s outside so it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s hot but it also has tents over it, you can find some good thing out there. The zoo is also in Navarre, it was supposed to shut down this year because of funding troubles but it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s some how pulled through. The base houses are pretty nice, roomy, plenty of storage, although the ones on the main base look like the projects from the outside they are nice on the inside. We were told back in 2007 that the main base houses were to be knocked down in 2011 but haven?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t heard of anything about it every since. Commando Village is the off base base housing, these were built and bought by the base, they are 2 story, with garages, and pretty nice although since my husband is security forces they have a lot of scary things happen over there like robberies, people jumping the fence and breaking in houses and such. I like living on the main base (pine shadows) because I feel safer especially when my husband deploys for 7 months. Also it really cuts down in gas costs, we can use as much electricity and water as we want and not get billed too. There is a commisary and a bx on base but sadly their hours kind of suck in comparison to Eglin Afb which is about 30 minutes away. You also have the option to live on Eglin afb, they just built some beautiful houses over there that you would never expect to be base housing, they look so classy. There is not a hospital on Hurlburt Field afb, I had my baby at Eglin, that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s also where the Emergency room is located- this is why some people with kids would much rather live on Eglin. However you can go to Hurlburts hospital building for Dr?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s appointments, there is a lab, and a prescription pickup place, and dental for military members. Most of the specialty like Dr?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s offices are on Eglin at the hospital.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been stationed on Hurlburt Field for 4 yrs as a military wife. We are originally from Indiana so coming from there to Florida was a huge change. The ocean is gorgeous with the sugar white sand, and aqua blue water. This town is really good for singles, there are plenty of clubs around for those who don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have children, and like to go out. People around here say this is more of L.A, then it is florida- meaning lower alabama. There are palm trees, but it wasn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t what I expected as far as that goes. There are events for families in this town which is true, Uptown station has an event calendar, and if you drive out near Destin there is something called Harbor Walk Village, (this is hard to miss it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a gorgeous building right over the bridge) they also have a lot of different events. This base is really hard to get off of since it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s special ops, a lot of people that live on my street have lived here for 8 yrs or more. I live on base, the B.A.H here is $1200 although we lived off base and had a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house that was $800 a month, you can find nice houses for around there, but the more you pay to rent a house the better you get. We felt live living off base we were better off financially. Living on base is a lot more convenient though because our house was in Navarre Fl, about 15 miles away. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve realized that it is hard to make friends here though, but as long as your willing to put yourself out there and go to the events then it will be easier to make friends. There is a facebook group that i?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve found a great resource for friend making it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s called Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field Military Wives, Fiancees, and Girlfriends -here we organize a meet up somewhere every so often and just ask eachother questions, and introduce ourselves. Feel free to join it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a public group, there are also pictures of base housing in the photos tab. The base does have it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s own events also, for the holidays. At christmas there is a parade, for easter theres an easter egg hunt for kids, like Christa said for 4th of July there is an event-they have a card board boat regada competition at this out on the Marina if you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know what that is it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a beach area on the base. Also as Christa said there are the spouses events for deployments, this is called hearts apart and its at the Airman and Family readiness center, there are also a lot of other seminar like things at the Afrc. Also we are getting a new child development center (daycare) There will now be two on our base because of the long waiting list. The second one is said to be finished in December- I think. There is a brand new playground also on the base, wish a splash pad for the kids. There are many playgrounds down the streets by the base houses, but these aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t as nice, and the new play ground has shades over it. There is a base swimming pool, there was a skating ramp that was huge, but they are working on relocating it, because the cdc will be there now. I hope this helps if you have any more questions for me feel free to ask.

The nice thing about this location is there are a lot of inexpensive if not free things to do in the local area. This is a Special Ops base with a high deployment rate that demands the most out of everyone stationed here. It is an intense social environment for everyone involved and you will notice that in your interactions as a spouse with other spouses, and amongst the children. The base goes above and beyond for the month of the military child and the 4th of July. They also try to have a lot of events/opportunities for children throughout the year and monthly plans specifically for spouses during a deployment.
